Tinker, Tailor

For a while, I'll have engineering and tailoring, so while it lasts, I can fly around on a rug:

Mainchenn doing quest: The Gordok Ogre Suit

Noor missed this one because I thought the door key was a mob drop (it's just in a box). When I'm higher level, I'll be able to do this without getting killed and I'll collect a bunch of ogre suits for Mainchenn's ding 80 party (sorry, only Alliance level 55 and over can wear it).

Blacksmithing + tailoring

Well, the 59 plateau is so boring (I only have 3 Strange Engine Parts so far, I need 12 if I don't explore Northrend), I'm looking at doing a couple more profession quests:

First, I can do Imperial Plate Armor by just getting to 265 blacksmithing. It's just a "go talk to this guy in Gadgetzan" quest.

Second, I can level up tailoring to do one of the tailoring specialties at level 60. Noor did this to get netherweave nets. I'll save all the bolts I fish up to save money. This won't help me get past level 59, but I'll try to time it so I can do it right after hitting 60.

Mainchenn doing quest: Shizz Work

About the most non-pacifist quest, since I have to lure helboars close enough so town guards kill them. But I don't get credit for killing them, so....

Mainchenn jumps down to Valgarde

Mainchenn using his Rocket Boots Xtreme Lite to zip down to Valgarde in Howling Fjord.

Mainchenn doing quest: Defenders of Darrowshire

This quest can be done no matter who kills a ghoul (unless the other player also has the quest, since the ghost disappears). Here Mainchenn gets the last four needed by following the Crimson Courier as she and her elite escort blast through Corin's Crossing.

The 59 plateau

Unless Winter Veil has changed, I think the only quests I can do are most of Winter Veil for about 18,500 XP, and the Gordok Orge Suit for 6,600 XP, which is 25,100 XP. Since I'm only 2 points into level 59, and it's 172,000 XP to 60, I still have 146,900 XP to get with Northrend exploring and Strange Engine Parts. It would take 12 engine parts to level the rest of the way without exploring.

the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby

The Kalu'ak Fishing Derby has two ways for a pacifist to gain XP. One is from the Dread Pirate Ring if you win, which will add 5% XP to quests (and killing monsters). The other is from the consolation prize, which appears to be a standard Bag of Fishing Treasures, which might contain the level 70 quest items Waterlogged Recipe or Sealed Vial of Poison.

I didn't win this first time, and I didn't get a consolation prize...

This suggests a slightly different Strange Engine Part strategy, at least until you win the new contest -- stockpile engine parts until you have enough to level, in case you win the ring some time later and get a 5% XP bonus.

I was able to finish Broodling Essence by following a mage who was apparently botting. I think I can try to do Defenders of Darrowshire too, since the comments say it doesn't matter who kills a ghoul to speak to a ghost. I can also do The Gordok Ogre Suit, but it might be easier if I wait a few levels.

I also got my first aid to 400.

UPDATE: I was able to do Defenders of Darrowshire, about 2/3rds of it was done with the help of the patrolling Crimson Courier and her elite escort as they blast through Corin's Crossing. Like engine parts, I won't actually turn it in until I either win the Kalu'ak fishing derby or I have enough XP to go up a level.

Engineers (level 65+, except gnomes) can now float forever

Some recent changes in tinkered cloaks for engineers now makes it possible to stay floating as long as needed. Flexweave Underlay/Springy Arachnoweave now makes you float for 30 seconds (with a use cooldown of 1 minute), and you can swap out your cloak without losing the float effect. Since tinkered items don't share cooldowns (they might if they are identically named, I think), you can make a macro like this:

/use 15
/equip cloak1
/equip cloak2

Pressing this button activates whatever cloak you're wearing, and the two /equip statements will swap between the two cloaks. When your float effect is gone after 30 seconds, just re-activate it, because the 2nd cloak is ready.

Noor has already done this, but Mainchenn can't get over 375 engineering, and these tinkers require 380 engineering to make (only 350 to use, though). I can't have another engineer do it, because it will make the cloak soulbound (even though the description doesn't say the cloak will become soulbound...)

Mainchenn doing quest: The Spectral Chalice

Mainchenn's turn to learn how to smelt dark iron; I had to wait until I was back to mining/engineering, so I could blow open the locks with engineering and get the mining-only quest.

(Sped up because it's too dull otherwise)

Mainchenn doing quest: Guardians of the Altar

Just a big healathon so this is just the end of the quest.

It's cooking!

Hit level 52 doing the one-time quests and the "bonus" daily (the daily quests after 1 AM and before dailies reset), plus a few of the same dailies again. After doing the Winterspring quests that I can do at level 52, the remaining dailies should get me to level 53 on Friday. Not too bad. At level 54, I'll drop herbalism and inscription for mining/engineering, so I can do a few quests like the Spectral Chalice and turning in the druid book in Dire Maul, plus the zapthrottle quest in Zangarmarsh at level 58.

Cooking turkeys is tricky; since they are "conjured" items that only last 7 days (both the raw and cooked versions), I can't buy them off the auction house and I can't have my bank alt hunt some turkeys and mail them. I have to buy them directly off other players, or have a go-between to get turkeys from my bank alt to Mainchenn.

UPDATE: By doing a bit more Outland exploring, I can hit 53 on Thursday. I may also take up skinning to try and do the first part of Are We There, Yeti?, since I'm going to drop both my professions soon anyway.

Cooking or Exploring

Mainchenn is again stalled at level 51.5 or so... Still no solid info on whether the Pilgrim's Bounty week will have quests that give you XP. If they do, I should be able to get a lot of XP with 5 dailies. If not, I think I'll have to explore most of Outland to hit 52 (I need to discover roughly 60 areas, and I have about 75 unexplored going by the Exploring achievements, which isn't an exhaustive list of XP-giving areas).

Demon Deck XP is now 1100, down from 1400, so it looks like Demon Decks will fall off as fast as the other decks. Swamp of Sorrows is ideal to grind Demon Decks when you're about level 47 or higher, since the mobs are gray or green, the area is mostly flat, and Blindweed is all over, which is also the best herb to mill for Demon cards, since they have the highest yield of rare pigments.

35, down from 65

Well, I managed to complete all the quests except Screecher Spirits, and I explored WPL and EPL, so now I only need a little less than 50,000 XP for level 50, or just over 35 Demon decks.

UPDATE: I also did Death From Below, which I was able to complete due to the bugginess of the quest. I accepted the quest, no naga came, and I failed. Then I took it again, the first wave of naga came, and when they were defeated, I completed the quest. Then the second wave (of three) came, but I had already completed the quest, so it didn't matter. When I tried earlier, there were too many naga for me to heal, and I can only heal the captain and myself, I can't heal any of the crew.

I'm also one screecher spirit away from finishing Screecher Spirits, and since you get credit by talking to the screecher spirit, I might be able to do it if I sneak up on another player doing the quest and speak to the spirit when it appears...

UPDATE 2: Got the last screecher spirit; out of quests unless I can find one I overlooked. Down to about 26 Demon decks.

Sunday, November 8, 2009

The 49 plateau again

As with Noor, Mainchenn has gotten to level 49 with very few quests available. Assuming I can't complete more quests (I still need found corpses for Screecher Spirits and A Little Slime Goes a Long Way, need to buy lots of rarely seen Vulture Gizzards for Vulture's Vigor, and I don't know if I can do Secret of the Circle yet, since I don't have Target Dummies), I'll have to explore the rest of WPL and EPL, and grind out about 65 Demon decks...

Mystery kills

Both Acaaju and I have a recent mysterious kill of unknown origin in our stats...

First, we both have 1 kill stat with a known origin; mine is the ghost that spawns in Stormwind during the Stalvan quest chain, which a town guard killed but it gave me credit for a kill, and Acaaju tried to Hibernate a bear when a town guard killed it.

Acaaju's stats don't even make sense. They now read:

Total kills 2
Total kills that grant experience or honor 1
Creatures killed 1
Different creature types killed 1
Creature type killed the most Beasts (1)
Total Honorable Kills --
World Honorable Kills 1
Continent with the most Honorable Kills 1
Total Killing Blows 1
World Killing Blows 1
Continent with the most Killing Blows Eastern Kingdoms (1)

So she has 1 honor kill, but 0 total honor kills....??

My stats are somewhat different:

Total kills 2
Total kills that grant experience or honor --
Creatures killed 2
Different creature types killed 2
Creature type killed the most Humanoid (1)
Total Honorable Kills --
World Honorable Kills --
Continent with the most Honorable Kills --
Total Killing Blows 1
World Killing Blows 1
Continent with the most Killing Blows Eastern Kingdoms (1)

My stats at least are consistent.

I check my kill stat pretty often (and during escorts), so I know this is pretty recent. The only quests Acaaju and I have in common are the Halloween dailies to stop the fires and smash the pumpkin. The "Shade of the Headless Horseman" dies after the fires are put out, and there are actually two different "Stop the Fires!" quests - one is actually called "Let the Fires Come!", which is available if the HH hasn't been summoned, and accepting it summons him. I wonder if doing the summoning version of the quest tags the Shade of HH as your kill, no matter who kills it. I can test this with a bank alt. But that wouldn't explain Acaaju's honor kill, and if the Shade isn't humanoid, my humanoid kill stat, or why it affect our stats differently.

UPDATE: "Let the Fires Come!" does not appear to tag the Shade of HH as yours; I started the event, but my bank alt still has 0 kills.

UPDATE 2: The only other possibility I can think of is that the horseman's Conflagrate attack can give players an aura that can kill other players, giving the first player a kill credit (and depending on level difference, a bogus honor kill).

UPDATE 3: Since Conflagrate can proc player abilities, it is almost certainly the cause. Luckily, the Horseman gives a warning just before this attack, so it's possible to run far enough away to avoid it.

Stats screwed up

Combat stats appear to be messed up again; both Acaaju and I have large hits listed instead of "--"

UPDATE: Putting out fires for the Headless Horseman daily counts as "damage", so the only remaining statistic that shows a pacifist are the small number of kills (thanks to Roguedubb for the tip)...

Mainchenn doing quest: Gerenzo's Orders

This quest was very difficult; I tried half a dozen times before I succeeded, and another annoying factor is that the adds never despawn, so I can't try again until either a server reset or someone comes along and clears out the adds (there appears to be a Tauren skeleton nearby, indicating some unfortunate player got more than he expected). I could only do this due to the mobs' inability to figure out how to get to me, so I could grab aggro by healing, but they couldn't beat on me. I would periodically lose aggro between waves which gave me a short time to drink, but with so many mobs on Piznik, I had to go back to healing him right away. I used two mana potions, my herbalism heal, my healing belt from the aquatic form quest, and my Veildust Medicine Bag from a druid quest.

Mainchenn doing quest: Missing in Action

Sped up; another healing escort that took about 20 minutes. If Noor could do this with bandages, I knew it would be a snap.

An old friend with a new face

Reinisch's sometime partner Ahimsah has also started a deck-grinding pacifist, now that battleground XP makes the old method trivial. She's now Acaaju, and with two players/accounts, it really helps in cross-faction trading. The more populous Horde side has a lot more cards and ink in their auction house.

She might be able to avoid the pitfalls that Mainchenn encounters, like the Stalvan quest, that can add kill credits to her statistics. I think the spiders that appear (and are aggroed) during the Deepmoss Spider Eggs quest might be a problem if anyone else is nearby and kills an aggroed baby spider, as another possible example.

Mainchenn doing quest: A Fine Mess

Unfortunately, I didn't start recording right at the start (I didn't think my Shadowmeld would actually work!) I accepted the quest (which unstealthed me) and was attacked by a nearby Trogg, so I jumped into the corner and shadowmelded, which removed me from combat. The movie starts when I'm shadowmelded in the corner - I change to cat and stealth out until I'm near the exit, then I cast a HOT on myself and run out so I get all the aggro. The quest succeeded when I got near the exit, so even though my shadowmeld didn't work too well, I just ran out.

Mainchenn hits level 25

Lots of deck-grinding... I've even started a Reinisch alt to buy up cards, inks, and pigments from the horde side when cheap ones show up (though I still need a go-between, since I can't buy it from my own alt). I also should have done more Rogue decks before the XP started going down.

To compare with Noor at level 25... back then, Noor had a 50% chance each day to have a battleground daily. Assuming she can do it (which wasn't always true), that's an average of just about 1,000 XP per day, which is 2 Swords Decks.

Two swords decks is 8 cards, each of which requires 2 of the rare milled pigments. Milling 5 herbs gives you about 0.4 rare pigments, on average (according to El's Inscription), so each card takes about 5 millings = 25 herbs x 8 = 200 herbs or 10 stacks per day. This is reduced when I can buy cheap cards that I need (I currently lack Ace of Swords) and when I can buy the ink & pigments. And this doesn't even consider needing to get the RIGHT random cards (though over the long run, it should average out).

Rant: Magic Dust is dead

Magic Dust, that greatest of secret weapons, was destroyed by patch 3.2

It still has the same tooltip, but does nothing except say "fizzled."

See wowhead.com for more details.

RETRACTION: Magic Dust isn't quite dead, it just always fizzles if the target is higher than your own level (at least for PvE). It appears to fizzle at higher levels, too.

Mainchenn doing quest: Blueleaf Tubers

This only shows one of six tubers needed for the quest, and it took me a long time to do, since I would hit the re-enter instance limit after only getting 1 or 2 tubers, and I'd have to get another "box with holes" in Ratchet.

I also didn't figure out exactly what I had to avoid right away -- if the snufflenose gopher gets hit while looking for a blueleaf tuber, he will go through the motions, but no tuber will appear (and that tuber location gets "used up"). So in order to get a tuber, I had to get aggro before the gopher, and if the nearest tuber was far off, another pig would attack the gopher anyway. I had to be lucky and have the gopher find a tuber close enough to avoid combat with a second mob.

Mainchenn doing quest: The Only Cure is More Green Glow

Needs more COWBELL!

Mainchenn doing quest: In Search of Thaelrid

And this is just a regular stealth run:

Gutrot Grats

The Naked Troll Warrior Gutrot is throwing a ding 80 party on September 26 on EU Aerie Peak. I can't be there, but if someone wants to be Reinisch (or Noor or Mainchenn) in my place, that's OK with me!

One shot. One kill

Ironic title, I know. I tried doing this my standard way, by just healing the NPC, but she runs out of arrows! Just before this quest went gray, I tried it again, this time grabbing aggro and running around a lot until I got far enough to get out of combat. I thought the mobs might despawn if I did that, but I don't think any did. However, I guess it must reset her arrow count or something, because she didn't run out this time.

The Curse of Stalvan

When I did part 6 of the Legend of Stalvan chain, the ghost appeared and cursed me as usual. When a town guard killed it, I checked and I did indeed get credit for killing it (though no XP)...

With any similar quests, I'll try Shadowmeld in case leaving combat untaps the mob so I don't get credit.

Bingles and the Bear

First, here's Mainchenn getting one of Bingles' tools; Shadowmeld allows a little more time to grab items, because the mobs are still running back at first:

Next, Mainchenn gets bear form in the Barrens after watching a tauren druid (Seraith) do the quest:

Mainchenn doing quest: Mist

This can be pretty easy if you put a HOT on Mist and she doesn't get into combat -- if a mob attacks Mist, the HOT will probably get them after you. Lifeblood rank 1 is a very powerful heal at this level, too.

Fairly new tapping rules

http://www.wow.com/2009/01/20/world-of-warcraft-3-0-8-patch-notes/

Patch 3.0.8:
Tapping: All player spells which cause a creature to become aggressive to you will now also immediately cause the creature to be tapped.

It appears that most (if not all) passive damage-dealing buffs like Thorns do NOT tap creatures, so I don't need to worry about taking Thorns off immediately if a passing druid tosses it on me (I still won't use it). I still might modify the NiceTry addon (which takes off a hunter's Misdirection on you) to only allow a few specific buffs from players on me. It should be easy to modify.

What might be harder is an addon that won't attack on a right click. I've been trying to open quest objectives with my back to them, so if I click on a mob my attack will fail, but an addon would really help. I nearly killed a chicken doing the CLUCK! quest, because you click on it to turn in the quest, but it can turn back to yellow without warning if you take too long, causing your click to kill it. Luckily, my back was turned...

Reaching level 20 -- and rerolling Mainchenn

Just before hitting level 20, I looked at Mainchenn's stats and was shocked to see he had credit for killing 1 beast, even though his "largest hit dealt" under Combat was still "--"

It took me a while to figure out what it was... when I did the escort quest The Sleeper Has Awakened, I tried using Hibernate on a Ghost Wolf at one point to try and pass by without fighting (which wouldn't have worked anyway -- the mob attacks when it wakes up). Instead, Kerlonian Evershade (the escortee) immediately started attacking it! Even though we were attacked by the (scripted attack) of furbolgs and he also killed those, I didn't get kill credit because I only healed him. But it looks like doing anything to a mob can give you credit if your escort kills it. That means I can't use anything during an escort -- no Magic Dust, no Hibernate, no Goblin Rocket Helmet or even a Target Dummy (I think). I'll do some more tests with other toons before using anything during an escort if I can't do it any other way.

Since it's taken me less than a week to get to level 20, I'll just reroll Mainchenn and avoid making that mistake again...

Mainchenn hits level 10

There weren't a lot of pacifist druids that I could find; "Mainchenn" is from British mythology:
Mainchenn is a visiting druid from Britain who disapproves of the constant petty battles being carried out between the people of Connaught and the people of Munster all on the head of two magical beings who are in constant rivalry with each other.

Here are the quests Mainchenn did to get from level 1 to level 10:

The Woodland Protector p1
Dolanaar Delivery
Package for Thurman (2)
Harlan Needs a Resupply
Wine Shop Advert
A Threat Within
Eagan Peltskinner

The Missing Scout (4)
Red Snapper - Very Tasty!
Find Acteon!

Gnarlpine Corruption
The Emerald Dreamcatcher (5)
Timberling Sprouts
(took up mining)
Supplies to Tannok
Scalding Mornbrew Delivery
Bring Back the Mug

Report to Thomas
A Bundle of Trouble
Deliver Thomas' Report

Shimmer Stout (10)

80 is doable - grinding XP without battlegrounds!

Again, I forgot that there already ARE low-level, repeatable quests that grant XP, and they aren't even daily quests, you can do them as often as you like.

The inscription decks (rogues, swords, mages, demons) all grant XP as often as you turn them in. Not a huge amount (about 30-40 turn-ins per level at the start of their 9 levels, and about 70-90 near the end), but not insignificant either. Once I do the two low-level blacksmith quests and the low-level leatherworking quest, I'll switch to inscription/herbalism and grind out decks to help leveling. The four deck types can be turned in starting at levels 10, 20, 30, and 40, but the auction house typically only has the level 10 (rogues) decks, because people use them to grind Darkmoon Faire reputation, and all the decks grant the same rep. Without battlegrounds, these decks and seasonal quests are the only XP grind I can do before level 55 and fishing up Strange Engine Parts, and level 62 with the Spirits of Auchindoun daily, until Cataclysm changes everything. (Addendum: from level 10 to level 40, there is always at least one Darkmoon Deck that isn't gray (i.e. can be turned in for full XP), and Demon Decks don't turn gray until -- level 55, when I can start turning in Strange Engine Parts)

As usual, I'll pop out of inscription/herbalism to do the leatherworking chain around level 30 and blacksmithing around 40. Since I don't do battlegrounds, I don't really need engineering except for occasional target dummies, so I can keep dropping professions as I need to.

The Night Elf Shadowmeld is nearly as good as vanish, at least against NPCs. It gets me out of combat, which is needed for some solo instance quests.

Reinisch hits level 80

Reinisch hit level 80:

The special announcement is -- I'm doing it once more, this time without battlegrounds (if possible)...

Since Cataclysm will changes a lot of quests, there might be enough of a "boost" from new quests to gain more levels. Plus, if I really want to get every last XP point, I can change to Horde and back to get many of the Horde quests. With any luck, Blizzard will add low-level dailies...

Party tonight

I'll be on as either Reinisch or Noorkhan (low level alt version of Noor) in Dalaran for the party.

I'll have a special announcement too!

Jeeves

Again, I am helped by bots (in two senses)...

Since the plans for Jeeves are BOP, as is the controller to summon him, my only way to get the plans would be to get it while recycling a mechanical's corpse. There was a Draenei Deathknight that appeared to be a bot running around the library area in Storm Peaks, killing the robot gnomes on mechanostriders. After recycling about 60 of them, I got the plans!

To make Jeeves, I needed all 3 kinds of repair bots, and two of those plans are BOP drops. However, the repair bots themselves are not BOP, so I could have another engineer make them for me.

Party next week!

Reinisch will easily get within level 80 this week, so I'm planning on dinging 80 on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 1 PM server time TIME CHANGED to Friday, Sept. 4 at 6 PM server time (server is US Pacific timezone). I'll do it by turning in a Dalaran fishing quest.

Anyone can make a level 1 character on The Venture Co server, and get to Dalaran unaided; here's how:

1) Go to Stormwind or Orgrimmar
2) Die
3) As a ghost, go to Borean Tundra by boat or zeppelin
4) Still as a ghost, run to Sholazar Basin and run up the avalanche
5) When you get to Icecrown, you will get a flying spectral mount
6) Fly up high towards Dalaran above Crystalsong Forest
7) As you enter the Crystalsong Forest zone, you will lose your mount, but if you are up high enough, you will land in Dalaran
8) Resurrect in the graveyard near the Violet Citadel
9) If you "miss" and end up on the ground, run back to the dam at the Decrepit Flow area and you should get another spectral flying mount.

However, you can also ask Pipkin (Alliance mage) for a portal, if he's on. He should be around just before the party starts. Reinisch can also try and buy a portal for last-minute arrivals, but that's a bit chancier.

Flying AND bandages

Reinisch hit 77, so now he can fly in Northrend (albeit still a slow roflcopter).

What is more interesting is that he did the Troll Patrol quest Can You Dig It? and one of the chests had the heavy frostweave manual! Blizzard apparently changed the contents in a recent patch, since wowhead.com only lists BC items as coming from the chests. I don't know the drop rate, maybe Noor should try this quest a few times...

My Questlog Runneth Over

Reinisch hit level 74, and with the Troll Patrol sequence, he might have more than 25 daily quests.

He has a 50% chance of being able to do the Shattrath cooking quest
He has a 66% chance of being able to do all of Troll Patrol (6 quests total, including the timed bonus); if he can't, he can still do 2 of them.

If all daily quests are available, Reinisch will have 28 to choose from. The average XP for all 6 Troll Patrol quests at level 74 is 12,350 XP each. Reinisch has three quests worth less than that -- the Shattrath fishing daily (and I just got the Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat) which is worth 0 XP, The Multiphase Survey (9,500 XP), and Further Conversions (9,500 XP). So I'll drop those if I can do all of Troll Patrol, and I'll still do the Multiphase Survey if I can't do the Shattrath cooking daily. I won't miss Further Conversions, as it takes 3 minutes for my Gnomish Remote Control to cool down, and every malfunction adds 3 more minutes. I don't remember what I get for the Blade's Edge dailies, I'll drop the Ray Wrangling if it isn't very much once I get low on Saronite Bombs (I have a lot in the bank from leveling up engineering).

UPDATE: Noor can get these same dailies, but looking at wowhead.com, they used to be behind some other group quest chain that neither one could complete, so it looks like it was changed by a recent patch.

The Explorer

While I'm still trying to find a horde tailor that can make a Belt of Blasting, I decided to explore the last few areas in Northrend to get the Explorer title.

UPDATE: Got the belt now, thanks to Zalcor. Plus, I did AV a couple times to hit 73 so I could do the Venture Bay and logging grounds daily quests.

Sha'tari Skyguard and Ogri'la

I don't know if Noor missed it (I remember looking for a way to do the Bomb Them Again! daily (which consists of bombing fel cannonball stacks, not monsters) and not finding a way), but Reinisch is able to do 4 more dailies:
Escape from Skettis
Bomb Them Again!
The Relic's Emanation
Wrangle More Aether Rays
(Reinisch kites 1 or 2 rays over to the Skyguard area, and then uses saronite bombs to subdue (but not kill) the rays to wrangle them)

Plus, now he can do:
Planning for the Future

As a pacifist, Reinisch doesn't loot a lot of money. He just hit 100 gold looted since the achievement system came in...

Tuesday, August 11, 2009

Hmmm....

After some checking, I decided to do Blighted Last Rites, because the 'victim' doesn't die, even though Reinisch (as a character) wouldn't know this. It opened up quite a few quests that I could do after that.

Reinisch hits level 70

Doing a few more AVs to get to 70, so now Reinisch can do 10-12 dailies (depending on whether he can do the Shattrath cooking daily (50%) or the daily Battleground (now includes Strand of the Ancients, which Reinisch can't do yet)).

The quests he can do now:
Spirits of Auchindoun
The Multiphase Survey
Gaining the Advantage (now fixed! Works for grandmaster gathering skill)
Open for Business
Know Your Ley Lines
Further Conversions
Shattrath fishing daily
Shattrath cooking daily (50%)
Preparing For The Worst
Dalaran cooking daily
Dalaran fishing daily
Battleground daily (80% or maybe 66% if the new BG is also a daily)

He can also try to buy up waterlogged recipes and sealed vials of poison from the Dalaran fishing rewards for more XP. I managed to buy 7 vials of poison before hitting 70 (which is when you can start turning them in).

The best thing added in the patch for pacifist PvP is the Mind Amplification Dish; it acts pretty much like the lower-level Mind Control Cap, but since it's a tinkered item, you can create a number of helms with the ability and they all have separate 10-minute cooldowns! Reinisch and Noor will probably have 3 or 4 each, great for grabbing back flags. I don't know if it can work while in combat, the tooltip doesn't say; old Mind Control Caps used to work in combat but they were changed later. If they work in combat, so much the better -- tell the enemy flag carrier to follow you and use rocket boots to bring them back to your base. As long as they don't misfire...

BG XP

Patch 2.3 first made grinding as a pacifist possible; that patch introduced daily battleground quests, so it was possible as early as level 10 to do a quest every day for anywhere from 0.5 to 1.5 bars of XP, and not run completely out of quests (not counting seasonal quests). Now, patch 3.2 has introduced battleground XP, and it's fairly easy to get 6-7 bars of XP each day, particularly with Alterac Valley.

Reinisch hit level 68, which also opens up Northrend quests for a lot more XP, including the Preparing For The Worst daily.

Enshrined Mace

Bought an Enshrined Mace of the Elder from the auction house. It's incredibly overpowered with 161 spellpower for one hand!

Compare it to other items a priest can use at level 67, sorted by spellpower. A green among oranges and purples!

Ach du lieber!

Somehow, Reinisch's YouTube video of him soloing Taretha's Diversion got picked up in Germany in some major way, and as of this writing has been viewed 11,859 13,725 times (it went up as I edited this).

Google even shows that it was, for a time, among the top 10 viewed movies (but as the summary is in German, it seems to be a German top 10):

    Taretha's Diversion

I had to do this quest twice; the first time, I died (and released) before I got credit for "Internment Lodges Set Ablaze", and even though they were burning, it wasn't complete. Since I couldn't re-burn a lodge, I had to reset and do it all over again. I nearly had to do it a third time, but I got credit with about 2 seconds left on my Spirit of Redemption form. I intended to delay my death as long as possible by using a target dummy, my cloaking device, and an invisibility potion, but I died right when I deployed the target dummy.

    Kibler's Exotic Pets

I couldn't think of a way to solo this until I remembered the platform that Vaelen is on (the guy who gives out the Seal of Ascension quest). That platform is high enough for me to zip over to the Ogres using my rocket boots. An invisibility potion and my cloaking device did the rest:

    Good Day at Blackrock

Managed to do a number of Blackrock quests:

Attunement to the Core was pretty easy, jumping out the window just before the big door, going down to the black anvil, and some lava jumping to the bridge. The only tricky part was getting past the 3 fire elementals on the bridge, which I did by going up the steps towards the dwarf room and using my rocket boots + levitation to jump over them.

Reinisch did The Spectral Chalice to learn how to smelt dark iron, but the quest itself was unexpectedly gray and resulted in less than 900 XP. It was still fun to do:

Mother's Milk was easier than expected:

En-Ay-Es-Tee-Why, the quest to gather 15 spider eggs, was about the same as Mother's Milk, but I didn't bother to use invisibility potions, I just ran past the orcs, feared them, and opened one or two egg sacs before dying and grinding out 15 that way (with occasional dungeon resets).

    Here's the proof:

I'm not sure if Reinisch can do Kibler's Exotic Pets...

    Cooking, no fishing yet

At level 65, I can now do the Dalaran cooking daily (only about 75% of the XP for a BG or towers daily), but I still can't get the fishing daily, that won't open until level 70...

    Skywing

After a few failed attempts, I finally managed to escort Skywing safely. Skywing took out the other mobs before Luanga showed up, and the next bit was really lucky -- my Renew on Skywing had Luanga come after me for a bit, but by running back to the other bird tower, I got out of combat! Every time I healed Skywing or got damaged (storm/lightning), I would go into combat, but I would go out of combat almost immediately. This allowed me to drink during the fight to keep my mana up and keep healing Skying. The two of them also fought straight across the bridge, so Skywing always fell back onto the bridge (instead of onto the ground) by Luanga's knockback effect. The whole thing took about 45 minutes.

Here's Reinisch with his new pet Miniwing and wearing his new green Mechbuilder's Overalls

    Green overalls

Mechbuilder's Overalls finally showed up in the horde Auction House, so Reinisch finally has the rare green overalls.

Reinisch is almost level 64 as the Fire Festival winds down. He can do 4 out of the 5 all 4 (Strand of the Ancients does not seem to be a BG daily) BG dailies, and usually win it, plus the Spirits of Auchindoun daily, and he'll start exploring more of Northrend to get to level 65, which should open the Dalaran cooking dailies and maybe the fishing daily, too.

I think I can do the Skywing escort if I can prevent Skywing from getting knocked down to the ground, but that's a bit tricky...

Later I'll post a montage of a bunch of times I've used Rocket Boots Xtreme + levitation to travel around for the Fire Festival.

Addendum: Reinisch was able to get neutral with Garadar, something Noor was never able to do with Telaar. Not many extra quests yet, but there are some gray ! that I should be able to do at 65 or 66.

    Yay! Buggy Midsummer Fire Festival

Resetting the fires has allowed me to get ALL the fires again, so I've gotten most of them twice. Someone even asked in the blizzard forums if re-doing fires is ok, and it is.

Anyway, Reinisch hit 60. He doesn't have enough to train fast riding, but with the 550G discount projected for the next patch, he may stick with ol' blue until the next patch.

    Sunday, June 21, 2009

    Argh! Buggy Midsummer Fire Festival

The quests from last year haven't reset, so (at the moment) I can't revisit all the fires I did last year. This will probably be hotfixed, since people need achievements for the special mount...more later.

OK, it's later. I managed to get all the fires that I didn't do last year (including the new ones in Northrend), and Blizzard will probably make the fires done last year doable again after a hotfix, which should get me about another level in XP. Currently, with Fire Festival quests and a few new ones that opened up, I've gone up about 4 levels.

OK, now it's the next day, and it looks like I can turn in A Thief's Reward every day, at least until they fix it again, because of the Fire Festival quest reset.

Upcoming patch 3.2 and Battleground XP

Patch 3.2, now on the PTR, should finally allow "pacifists" to grind by getting XP for attaining various battleground objectives. No indication how much XP, but Blizzard is probably doing this, at least in part, to help people get to 80 before the next expansion, so it should be non-trivial. I'll see if I can test it out on the PTR, but old BGs are usually empty on the PTR. UPDATE: official word is that it will be somewhat slower than questing or grinding, but that's miles ahead of my options now!

Flag capping has been reduced from 10 seconds to 8 seconds, so I might lose my Glyph of Psychic Scream, which increases the duration from 8 to 10 seconds and adds 8 seconds to the cooldown. I often use it to try and cap a flag, so having it last as long as it takes to cap really helps. But with the shorter cap time, it won't be worth it. (On the other hand, most everyone else already thinks this glyph is worthless).

    Of twinks and bots

Leveling without killing things is such a strange way to play that it practically forces me to be a semi-twink; I need to win daily battlegrounds, even if I'm near the bottom of the bracket, so gearing myself up as much as possible makes sense. When I run out of quests, I can mine & fish to raise cash for gear.

I've also "needed" bots for a few quests; Reinisch just did Broodling Essence exactly the same way that Noor did -- by following a hunter bot around Burning Steppes and zapping Broodling Whelps before the hunter kills it. Last easily doable quest for him, too, just got him to level 52 with the followup letter delivery.

    Getting out of combat

Level 50, like all multiples of 10, opens up a lot of new quests, some of which I can actually do. The runecloth turn-ins alone got me 40% of the way to level 51.

I managed to do a couple of difficult quests that had items I could only use while out-of-combat -- a bit tricky since I can't kill mobs, and I don't have a race/class ability like Vanish/Feign Death/Divine Intervention/Shadowmeld/mage Invisibility. However, as an engineer, I can use the Gnomish Cloaking Device, which does get me out of combat; well, usually...

The first was Scarlet Diversions, which by the comments on wowhead.com is pretty difficult for a player in his mid-50s, because it has a lot of mobs in one area with melee & ranged attacks, plus medic NPCs that heal everybody.

This quest is in two parts, even though the quest progress only has one completion (which ALSO caused some problems). You need to use Flame in a Bottle to burn the tent, and then plant a Scourge banner so the Scarlet Crusade will blame the Scourge.

I burned the tent the first time by just charging in a using the bottle before dying -- it acts like a spellcast, so it gets pushed back but continues during combat, instead of aborting. I saw the tent burn animation before releasing, but when I got back, then tent was back. I tried a couple more times using a target dummy, but even after doing it, I couldn't plant the Scourge banner because it said I was in combat.

I was ready to give up, but then (going by wowhead comments) I figured I could probably try the banner after I rezzed, if I could figure out how to get close enough without getting into combat. Mind Soothe didn't let me get close enough, so I decided to activate my Goblin Cloaking Device and run into the tent. It worked! I didn't even come out of cloaking when I started using the banner, which almost always happens when you try to do anything while cloaked. An invisibility potion probably would have worked too, since you can start planting the banner while invisible.

The other quest was All Along the Watchtowers, a quest Noor couldn't get to because the Alliance version has a killing prerequisite (the Horde prereq is Scarlet Diversions). Again, using a torch meant I had to be out of combat, and with ghouls outside and a (formerly elite) Skeletal Warlord inside each tower, that was a problem.

After a number of deaths, I hit on this tactic: die inside a tower and rez on the top of the broken steps inside (the warlord can't figure out how to get to me at the top steps, so I can buff up). Go down the steps and cast Shackle Undead on the warlord (until it takes; he's 6-7 levels higher than me). Then go near the door (still on the inside) and hope I go out-of-combat before the shackle fails so I can use the torch.

Eventually, I was able to do all the towers, but it was something of a grind. With some of the Redpath quests, I got to level 51, which means I can now do the AV battleground daily.

    Reinisch hits 50

With the Midsummer Fire Festival approaching, I decided to get all the flight paths in Outland, and after doing that, I was only 4 bars from level 50, so I explored most of what was left of Azeroth (Silithus, EPL, WPL, etc) and hit level 50. This puts me in the next BG bracket, so I had to say goodbye to Worf, a 49 twink Hunter who can hold off half a dozen Alliance at times.

I powerleveled engineering to 375, so now I have Rocket Boots Xtreme Lite and Foreman's Enchanted Helmet. If I hang out at the Lumber Mill in Arathi Basin, I should be able to get to any node in trouble using my boots and Levitate.

    Chasing A-Me 01

I was finally able to do the last part of Chasing A-Me 01 when I checked and saw that most of the apes were gone. A-Me only had to deal with about 4 apes, all outside the cave, and a couple of tar pit elementals near the end. An level 51 Night Elf (Triblade) even helped with the last tar pit elemental right near the end.

A player named Fionn in Thunder Bluff put out a Foam Sword Rack; if only the swords didn't vanish when you log out like all conjured items, it would be a perfect weapon for Reinisch (and Noor).

Addendum: I was also able to finally complete Screecher Spirits while it was still green; a couple of high-level Alliance characters were running around killing all the mobs, which allowed me to finally finish it.

    Some gray quests

Both Rotting Hearts and Spinal Dust are quests that can be completed by buying unbound drops; I didn't know this until I saw them in the auction house under "quest items". Very little XP by now, but still, it's the principle.

It looks like Reinisch will hit the Midsummer Fire Festival at level 49, just like Noor did last year, which should help boost him to level 60 or so soon after. Assuming Reinisch has the same success/failure with faction friendliness (he also won't be able to get to Hellfire Fortifications), he'll be able to do Spirits of Auchindoun as a daily starting at level 62 (not 63 as wowhead.com claims). The Dalaran cooking daily should start at level 65, and at level 70 lots will open up

Reinisch doing quest: Into the Depths

To do Into the Depths, you have to go down the righthand circular staircase in the Sunken Temple and interact with the Altar of Hakkar.

Noor did this using stealth; Reinisch just followed the patrolling serpent down, then activated his Goblin Rocket Boots & Cloaking Device, and quaffed a Lesser Invisibility Potion just before de-cloaking. I probably should have recorded how he made it into the instance, as that was a bit more exciting...

    Reinisch gets his discombobulator on

The Security DELTA Data Access Card finally turned up in the horde auction house, so I could get the plans to make Discombobulator Rays. At level 46, I didn't need stealth or invisibility, but I did a few precautionary Mind Soothes...

    Reinisch hits 45

46 immediately after -- I finally hit a really good fed ex quest, Stealing Knowledge and all eight subsequent delivery quests, getting me nearly halfway to 46. With the old world Children's Week quests and the last of Noblegarden, plus the imperfect AND perfect Draenethyst fragments from Kum'isha, and a little more exploring of Azshara and Felwood, I hit 46 a day later. I wanted to hit level 46 so I could take 2 points in the talent Body and Soul for WSG runners. Of course, now I want to hit 47 so I can wear both of my Freezing Bands, which are now generic +18 spellpower and the freezing proc.

Update: After Noor did both the Azeroth and Shattrath orphan chains for Children's Week, I realized that I never did the Azeroth orphan chain on either Noor or Reinisch last year! Without the built-in calendar back then, it was easy to miss because there weren't any commoners spreading the word. Missed a few XP there...

    More "leeching" quests

I can do the Muisek series of quests in Feralas, if I'm lucky enough to find corpses to use them on. I've done the first one (Owlbears in Hinterlands) and I've gotten a few of the hippogryphs. Noor was never able to get Screecher Spirits done, and Reinisch still has it, but it looks like he'll be hanging around Feralas a while, so maybe he'll get lucky.

Addendum: I've been able to do all the Muisek quests except the last one, which involved corpses of the elite giants in the northern region of Feralas, and I still haven't been able to do Screecher Spirits.

    Mithril Order

After saving up too much copper and not quite enough mithril (and no steel bars), Reinisch went back to blacksmithing for a few hours and did the Mithril Order chain to get about 80% of a level in XP. Like Noor, he now has the now-useless special trinkets:

    Reinisch hits 40

Just a little over halfway through level 39 (about 11 bars), and I decided to start the wild leatherworking quest chain. When I finally completed it, I was only about 2500 points away from level 40, so I explored more of Tanaris to hit 40. I was able to buy the mats needed to take Elemental Leatherworking, which got me more points that Noor missed (she did it well before level 40, so it wasn't practical to keep it for the leatherworking specialization quests that start at level 40).

I'll probably re-take mining for a bit to get more copper bars before dropping it yet again and doing the blacksmith chain.

    I ♥ HOTs

Reinisch (and before him, Ahimsah) has recently done two escort quests that Noor could never do; Galen's Escape and Get me out of Here! Galen is especially hated for strolling right through the Broken Ones' village and getting attacked by, uh, hordes of attackers.

I successfully completed both quests, even though I died twice during each escort; my heals-over-time were enough to keep them alive while I ran back from the graveyard. I was also careful to pull off extra attackers at the right time by using healing aggro; Melizza from the second escort drew two patrols at the same time, with five attackers on her at one point, but I managed to heal her through it. Both quests took over half an hour each.
