Started the Azshara quest Absorbent, thinking it might absorb some water if I just get close to a water elemental. It did -- but killed two elementals that attacked me! Luckily, I checked my stats and they didn't count as my kills. But I abandoned the quest anyway...
There are a few other dubious quests like that, where you have to gather creatures for purposes that aren't exactly peaceful even though you don't get a kill for them.
Yeah, I've been semi-roleplaying quests that look like that. I've skipped a couple for roleplaying reasons that wouldn't've given me kills, like a new one near Deathknell to gather herbs to poison pumpkins (you get it after gathering the pumpkins), but I've also done a couple that kill NPCs, like one to destroy a tower in Azshara -- I expected it to be like earlier quests where a "destroy" animation is played and nothing else happens, but for this one, at least, NPCs fall out and "die". I still didn't get kill credits, though.
Sometimes the reverse is true, too; for both Mainchenn and Flos, I skip quests where e.g. you have to break open people trapped in webbing, because that could count as a "kill" in statistics (and, in Flos' case, I'd also like to keep her 'total damage inflicted' to zero), even though freeing people trapped in webs would be fine for a pacifist.
